The Trip

Written and directed by Darcy Turenne and shot by Derek Heidt, I edited and colour graded this winning entry in the 2014 WSSF 72hr Filmmaker Challenge.

Consisting of a single, four and a half minute long shot, extensive work was required in post to stabilize minor camera shakes, re-time and re-frame shots and to establish a shifting colour grade to counter the constantly changing light levels – all without the benefit of cuts to hide the changes.

Shooting one continuous take with no opportunity to adjust settings presented a problem with exposure – specifically when the location shifted from open ground to in the trees.

We picked a middle ground that didn’t lose highlight detail too much on the brighter sections, but retained detail in the darker areas, then corrected the overall piece with a series of fluidly changing colour grades.
